Why you need a defibrillator for workplace safety

Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) can strike anyone, anywhere – including your workplace. Having a defibrillator for workplace emergencies isn’t just a smart investment – it could be the difference between life and death when every second counts.

Here’s why your business should be prepared.

What Is a Defibrillator and How Does It Work?

A defibrillator is a medical device that delivers a shock to the heart during cardiac arrest, helping to restore a normal rhythm. A defibrillator for workplace use is usually an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), designed for untrained responders with clear voice prompts and easy operation.

The defibrillator works by stopping the heart while it is a rhythm that cannot support life – commonly Ventricular Fibrillation. The heart’s natural pacemaker should then take over and restore a normal rhythm.

Cardiac Arrest in the workplace

More than 60,000 out of hospital cardiac arrests occur in the UK every year, and sadly less than 1 in 10 of these are survived currently. Intervention and defibrillation within 3-5 minutes is needed to give the best chance of cardiac arrest survival.

Currently, ambulance waiting times for a category 1 call are targeted to be less than 15 minutes – by this point, survival from a cardiac arrest would be highly unlikely if CPR and a defibrillator had not been used.

Simply waiting for the emergency services is not a feasible option, steps must be taken before this to give the best chance at survival and a defibrillator on site allows this.

Why you should have a Defibrillator for workplace safety

Saves Lives

Immediate defibrillation can double or triple the chances of survival. Having a defibrillator for your workplace makes that possible.

Promotes a Safety-First Culture

Employees feel safer knowing that life-saving equipment is available on-site.

Meets Legal & Industry Standards

Many sectors – from education to manufacturing – require defibrillators in public and private work environments to comply with safety regulations.

Shows you value your people

Installing a defibrillator demonstrates a proactive commitment to health and safety.

Be confident to act when every second counts

Confidence in your first aid skills can reduce hesitation when intervening to give care to someone suffering a suspected cardiac arrest. With the casualty’s chances of survival falling by around 10% every minute – prompt action is needed to give them the best chances.
