How often should you service or replace your Defibrillator?

An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is one of the most important pieces of lifesaving equipment you can own. Whether it’s in a workplace, school, gym, community centre, or your home, a defibrillator can make the difference in a sudden cardiac arrest emergency.

Like any medical device, a defibrillator maintenance  is vital  to ensure it works when you need it most. How often should you get a defibrillator service or replace the device?

Defibrillator self tests

Most AEDs perform tests on themselves on a daily, weekly or monthly basis to ensure that they are still capable of delivering a shock, and will alert you if something goes wrong during this test, usually by flashing a red light or beeping.

Best practice for overseeing this self test process include:

  • Monthly visual inspections: Confirm the device is in its case, the status indicator shows it’s ready, and there’s no visible damage.
  • Check expiration dates: Pads and batteries have limited lifespans, even if unused. Mark these dates clearly so you can replace them before they expire.

Battery replacement

Defibrillator batteries are typically not rechargeable, but do have a long lifespan of several years. They typically last from around 2 to 5 years depending on the manufacturer – but may need to be replaced sooner if the device has been used in a rescue.

Best practice would be to keep a spare battery close to your defibrillator.

Pad replacement

Electrode pads typically need replacing more often than batteries due to the gel adhesive used to ensure a good connection to the skin drying out. As a result, pads usually last between 2 to 4 years.

Pads must be replaced immediately if they are used. If your AED will be in an area used by both adults and children, you may also need a set of paediatric pads.

Replacing your device

While an AED can last a decade or more, most manufacturers recommend replacing the device every 8 to 10 years. Technology evolves, and newer models often come with updated features, better reliability, and compliance with the latest resuscitation guidelines.

Servicing

A cost effective way to make sure your defibrillator is in working condition is to have one of Defib Warehouse’s qualified engineers come out to carry out some checks on the device. These AED health checks provide peace of mind as well as a document certifying your defibrillator as operational for 12 months. These are priced at £175+VAT.

Stress-free Defibrillator Maintenance contract

A longer term option for defibrillator maintenance is a 5 year maintenance contract.

This contract includes the following:

  • Registration in our maintenance system, allowing us to notify you of any product recalls or updates through the duration of the contract, which is available for 5 years
  • Annual servicing of your defibrillator, completed on-site by one of our certified engineers
  • Discount on any consumables (pads and batteries) through the maintenance period
  • Email notifications when your consumables are due to expire
  • 10 e-learning licenses annually on our bespoke platform
  • A loan defibrillator in case of malfunction or repairs to your device

This is priced at £200+VAT.
