How much does a defibrillator cost?

A common question from people considering investing in an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is the price. So, how much does a defibrillator cost?

Prices for units can vary greatly depending on the brand and features of the defibrillator.

An easy analogy is to think of a defibrillator like a car: you can buy a cheaper car that will still get you from A to B, or pay a bit more for a car with extra features that make driving easier for some people.

The same is true with defibrillators. Entry-level models will still get the job done and deliver a lifesaving shock, but more expensive models can offer additional features such as CPR feedback, full-colour screens, and even Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi-enabled models include the ZOLL AED 3 and Mindray BeneHeart C1A (subscription required).

This guide covers what a defibrillator costs by brand and type, the cheapest options available, buying vs. renting, and the full cost of ownership.

What does it actually cost to own a defibrillator?

More affordable defibrillators

Entry level defibrillators start around £700+VAT, with the lowest priced defibrillator on the Defib Warehouse website currently being the iPAD NFK200 defibrillator, priced at £745+VAT*. Despite its lower price, this unit does offer additional features such as a paediatric switchto change between adult and child modes.

Other defibrillators around this price point include the Philips HeartStart HS1 and the iPAD SP1 fully automatic defibrillator.

Mid-range defibrillators

Mid-range devices include defibrillators such as the ZOLL AED 3, which comes with a full colour screen to talk the user through CPR, especially useful if the user is deaf or hard of hearing.

Another defibrillator in this price bracket is the Physio Control LIFEPAK CR2, which also features a paediatric switch and CPR coaching. The Lifepak CR2 is currently on offer – reduced by £450+VAT.*

The ZOLL AED Plus is a similar unit, priced lower than the AED 3. It offers ‘premium’ features such as CPR feedback and visual instructions in the form of illuminated images on the AED, as well as audio prompts to guide you through the rescue.

Higher end defibrillators

At the higher end of the price scale, devices can be priced from £2000+VAT upwards such as the Schiller FRED Easyport Plus Fully Automatic Defibrillator.

Buying vs Renting a defibrillator

To remove the upfront cost of a defibrillator altogether, many choose to rent the device. From as little as £1 per day, you can receive an AED, storage and consumables. As well as this, renting a defibrillator from Defib Warehouse gives you 50 licenses to our bespoke e-learning platform ELSA.

Through ELSA, you can assign courses to your employees to help them understand how to use your defibrillator device, perform CPR, and administer general first aid.

Why you should invest in a defibrillator

When a cardiac arrest strikes, the speed in which treatment is delivered is a highly important factor – chances of survival fall by 10% for every minute someone is in cardiac arrest without treatment. The only definitive treatment for cardiac arrest is a shock from a defibrillator.

Less than 1 in 10 people who suffer a cardiac arrest in the UK survive according to a study by Warwick University. This figure may seem alarming, and can be improved greatly by making AEDs more available and educating people on how to use them.

If an AED shock is delivered within 3 to 5 minutes of the casualty collapsing, survival rates can be as high as 74%. Having one nearby could really be the difference between life and death.

Looking after your defibrillator

An important part of defibrillator ownership is making sure your lifesaving device is kept in working order and is ready to deliver a shock in the event of an emergency. Defib Warehouse offers three to five year maintenance contract to keep your defibrillator serviced and any consumables such as pads and batteries are replaced when needed.

These five year packages also include a loan defibrillator in case of any repairs to your device and 10 annual e-learning licenses to familiarise yourself and those around you with using a defibrillator.
