Which is the best defibrillator for construction sites?

While there is no legal requirement to keep a defibrillator on a building site, employers in the UK must provide “adequate and appropriate” safety provisions by law.

Due to the physically demanding nature of construction work and the risks associated, it is highly recommended that a defibrillator is kept on site to protect employees. However, some defibrillators are more suited to the potentially dusty, dirty building site where the device may be dropped or banged.

So, which is the best defibrillator for construction sites?

What to look for in a defibrillator for construction sites

When choosing a defibrillator for a construction site, there are a few key considerations to make:

  • IP rating – Ingress Protection or IP is a meaure of how well the defibrillator stops dust or water from getting into the device, causing damage. This is usually written as IP followed by two numbers such as 55 with the first number representing dust protection, while the second represents protection against liquids.
  • Drop test – Most defibrillators have been through testing to measure the height from which the device can safely be dropped from without breaking. This ensures the defibrillator will still function despite accidental dropping which is a possibility. Drop test results are displayed as distances e.g. 1 meter.
  • Outdoor storage – If the defibrillator is going to be stored outdoors, an outdoor cabinet will be required to protect the AED from the elements. If the defibrillator is going to be stored in an office, then an indoor cabinet or wall hanger will suffice.
  • Multiple languages – Having a defibrillator which can display or read out instructions in multiple language can be a key feature on a construction site, where employees may be from multiple nationalities. Some defibrillators can be programmed in several languages. For example the Primedic HeartSave Y & YA can store up four languages at once, which can be switched at the push of a button.
