Defib Warehouse donates Lifesaving Defibrillator to London Church

Defib Warehouse is proud to have provided a lifesaving defibrillator donation to St George’s Indian Orthodox Church in London, helping improve emergency preparedness for hundreds of worshippers and visitors.

The church welcomes approximately 150 to 250 people to its regular Sunday services, with congregation members ranging in age from just one year old to 95. Alongside weekly worship, the church hosts conferences, meetings and larger community events throughout the year.

With so many people gathering regularly, having access to a defibrillator can make a vital difference in the event of a sudden cardiac arrest, when survival rates fall by 10% every minute without a shock.

Supporting the Safety of the Whole Community

The donated automated external defibrillator (AED) will help ensure that the church’s first aid team and congregation have access to lifesaving equipment should a cardiac emergency occur.

The Eastcheap church’s Safeguarding Officer, Dr M. I. Samuel, expressed his gratitude for the donation, highlighting the importance of protecting everyone who attends the church.

“Thank you for donating the defibrillator to our church. It is a valuable investment in the safety and wellbeing of everyone attending our services, conferences, meetings and community events. Our regular Sunday services welcome between 150 and 250 people aged from 1 to 95, and several larger events take place each year. Having an AED readily available provides an important additional measure of safety and demonstrates our commitment to caring for one another.”

Providing reassurance at an event welcoming over 700 people

The importance of having a defibrillator available was highlighted during the church’s Talent Event on 26 September, which brought together more than 700 attendees of all ages.

With such a large gathering, having an AED on-site provided additional reassurance to the church’s first aid team, helping them feel better prepared to respond to a potential cardiac emergency.

Dr John Philip, a trustee, explained: “It was a major asset to have the AED available during the Talent Event on 26 September, which welcomed over 700 attendees across all age groups. Our first aid team felt reassured that we were better equipped to respond to a cardiac emergency. The AED will now continue to serve our congregation and visitors at St Margaret Pattens Church in Eastcheap. We are very grateful to Defib Warehouse for this thoughtful and generous donation.”

Making lifesaving equipment more accessible

Sudden cardiac arrest can happen to anyone, at any age and without warning. When someone suffers a cardiac arrest, every second counts.

Immediate CPR and early use of a defibrillator can significantly improve a person’s chances of survival, making accessible AEDs an important part of emergency preparedness in public and community spaces. A shock from a defibrillator in the first 3 to 5 minutes of collapse can increase survival rates to as high as 74%.

For churches, community centres and other venues that regularly bring people together, having a defibrillator readily available can help those nearby act quickly while emergency services are on their way.

Lyndsey Hope, Managing Director of Defib Warehouse, said: “At Defib Warehouse, we believe that everyone should have access to lifesaving equipment, not just those in hospitals or healthcare settings.

“We chose to support St George’s Indian Orthodox Church because of the important role it plays in bringing its community together. With hundreds of people attending services and events throughout the year, from young children to the elderly, we recognised how valuable having a defibrillator on-site could be.

“We’re delighted to have made this defibrillator donation and hope it provides peace of mind to the congregation, visitors and wider community for years to come.”
